Self-healing is any activity one can do in order to function better physically, psychologically, and socially. When an individual heals from within, he/she/they develop resilience and find happiness.
In order to self-heal, an individual must first identify the needs of one’s body and mind. At the very basic level, for physical self-healing, one must exercise in moderation, sleep at least 6 to 7 hours a day, eat at least three balanced meals and take time for themselves to relax through meditation and self-reflection on one’s day to day activities. However only physical care is not enough to heal from within, one must also practice mental hygiene in order to truly heal. An individual can self-heal psychologically by engaging in positive self-talk. Positive self-talk includes saying positive affirmations to oneself, acknowledging one’s strengths and weaknesses without being judgmental and being mindful of one’s thoughts as they come and go. Apart from positive self-talk, engaging in any kind of self-care activity: it can be spending time with your pet, gardening, cooking or any activity that brings us joy can also help an individual heal from within. Practicing gratitude or saying out loud the things one is grateful for, or writing them down is another practice that allows us to appreciate all that we have and live a fulfilling life.
The propagator of Logotherapy, Viktor E. Frankl, stated that it is our choice as to how we interpret our lives but it is our responsibility to interpret our lives meaningfully and live a life of meaning. He was a prisoner of the Holocaust during the Second World War. When he was finally liberated, he had a lot of difficulty adjusting to society but he was resilient and he healed himself physically and emotionally and lead a meaningful and happy life.
Self-healing in day to day life is important because it is crucial for a well-being and overall functioning. When we can self-heal, we cultivate stronger bodies and minds and we become resilient and self-healed individuals can appreciate the meaning and happiness their life provides.
